Why give close to home?
You can see the difference. A local charity is often a handful of people and volunteers, working a few streets from where you live. Your gift goes into the community you're part of.
Most of them are small, and few can afford to advertise. That's why we built whotogiveto. The best fit for you isn't always the best-known charity.
How we choose
- Every registered charity counts. We start from all 185,114 charities on the Charity Commission register for England and Wales, not a list of partners.
- Nobody pays to be here. No charity can pay for a place on this page or on your shortlist, and we never take a commission.
- Every match comes with reasons. When we recommend a charity, we tell you in plain English why it fits what you told us.
Charity data comes from the Charity Commission register, last refreshed in June 2026. "Nearby" means the charity's registered address is within the distance you pick. More on how we choose.
Questions people ask
How do I find local charities to donate to?
Put your postcode or town in the box at the top of this page. We'll show you the registered charities based within a few miles of you, from all 185,114 on the Charity Commission register for England and Wales. If you'd like help choosing, answer a few short questions and we'll pick the few that fit you best, with the reasons why.
How can I check a local charity is genuine?
Look it up on the Charity Commission's register by its name or charity number. Its page there shows what it does, who its trustees are and its latest accounts. Every charity we show you links straight to its register page, so you can check before you give.
Do small local charities need donations more?
They often feel your gift more. About 7 in 10 charities on the register have an income under £100,000 a year, and most have no fundraising team. A regular gift, even a small one, helps them plan ahead.
Can I give time instead of money?
Yes. Many local charities need volunteers as much as donations, from helping at a food bank to becoming a trustee. Tell us you'd like to give time when you get your shortlist, and we'll take that into account. Your local volunteer centre can also point you to roles nearby.
Does Gift Aid work with local charities?
Yes, as long as the charity is registered for Gift Aid with HMRC, and most registered charities are. If you pay UK income tax, Gift Aid adds 25p to every £1 you give, at no cost to you. Just tick the Gift Aid box when you donate.
Why isn't a charity I know listed?
We list charities on the register for England and Wales, by their registered address. So a charity won't show up here if it's based in Scotland or Northern Ireland, if it's too small to have to register (under £5,000 a year), if its registered address is somewhere else, such as a head office, or if it registered after we last refreshed our copy in June 2026.
Not sure what you care about most?
That's fine. Tell us a little about yourself, and we'll find a few charities that really fit.
